Stanislaus River Juvenile Chinook Outmigration Update                                        June 21, 2005

June 6 through June 16, 2005, Report No. 11

Oakdale

A total of 110 juvenile Chinook were captured between June 6 and June 16 increasing the season total to 187,862.  Daily catch fluctuated throughout the sampling period and ranged from 0 to 22 Chinook (Figure 1).  Average forklength was 91 mm and ranged from 71 mm to 117 mm.  Average weight for captured Chinook was 8.7 g and ranged from 4.6 g to 19.9 g.  No O. mykiss were captured during the sampling period.

Average forklength did not change since the previous sampling period (i.e., May 23 to June 5); however, average weight decreased by 0.2 g.  Sampling was terminated for the season at Oakdale on June 16 due to consistently low catch during the past several weeks.

No trap efficiency releases were conducted at Caswell during the sampling period due to low catch of natural Chinook.

Caswell

A total of 150 juvenile Chinook were captured increasing the season total to 25,411.  Daily catch ranged from 0 to 30 Chinook (Figure 2).  Average forklength was 94 mm and ranged from 75 mm to 124 mm.  Average weight for captured Chinook was 9.3 g and ranged from 5.4 g to 22.0 gNo O. mykiss were captured during the sampling period.

Average forklength increased by 1 mm and average weight increased by 0.5 g over the previous sampling period (i.e., May 23 to June 5).   Sampling was terminated for the season at Caswell on June 16 due to consistently low catch during the past several weeks.

No trap efficiency releases were conducted at Caswell during the sampling period due to low catch of natural Chinook.

Environmental Data

Environmental conditions fluctuated during the sampling period as releases at Goodwin Dam continued to decrease from the Vernalis Adaptive Management Plan (VAMP) period.  Post-VAMP flow releases were ramped down from 1,500 cfs to 300 cfs at a rate of 100 cfs per day over a twelve day period ending on June 10.  Instantaneous temperature fluctuated between 54° F and 62° F at Oakdale and between 61° F and 70° F at Caswell.  Turbidity ranged from 1.5 NTU to 4.3 NTU at Oakdale and from 2.6 NTU to 4.8 NTU at Caswell.  During the sampling period, flow releases from GDW ranged between 734 cfs and 252 cfs.  Flows at Orange Blossom Bridge (OBB; RM 46.9) ranged from 345 cfs to 617 cfs and Ripon (RIP; RM 15.8) ranged from 394 cfs to 944 cfs
